What Makes a Garden Bed Look Designed Rather Than Just Planted

Two beds can contain the same plants and the same mulch and look completely different from the street. What separates them is almost never the planting list — it is three things that cost nothing extra to get right at the start.

The first is the shape. A bed drawn as one long, confident curve reads as deliberate; a bed made of several small wiggles reads as an accident, and it is harder to mow around too. Lay a hose on the ground and stand back at the kerb before you cut anything — the line either looks intentional from there or it does not, and no amount of planting will rescue it later.

The second is the edge. A clean spade-cut edge, re-cut once a year, is what stops a bed from bleeding into the lawn and what makes mulch look contained rather than spilled. It is the least glamorous part of the job and the first thing a passer-by notices, which is exactly why we treat edging as part of building a bed rather than as a separate service to sell you.

The third is planting in groups. One of everything gives you a collection; three or five of the same thing gives you a block of colour and form that carries at a distance. Layer them by height so nothing hides behind anything else, and mix in something evergreen so the bed still has structure in February when the perennials are gone.

Get those three right and the bed will look good with fairly ordinary plants. Get them wrong and expensive planting will not save it.
